Sonargaon Tour
Duration: Full Day
Sonargaon makes an excellent day trip from Dhaka, combining countryside, culture, archaeology and adventure. Located 27 km southeast of Dhaka on the banks of the Ganges delta, it was the administrative capital of Bengal before being moved to Dhaka in 1610. The Buddhist ruler Danujamadhava settled in Sonargaon (then called Suvarnagrama) in the mid-13th century. Muslim settlers arrived towards the end of the 13th century, with several Muslim rulers conquering the region between the 14th and 17 th centuries. Among these rulers were Bahadur Shah, Fakhrudddin Mubarak Shah, Ilyas Shah, and Isa Khan. In the 19th century the British established a city in Sonargaon, naming it Panam city.
As a busy trading place, it became an
important centre for the manufacture and export of kantha (traditional
indigo-dyed Muslin) and was the finest in the region. Hindu traders built many fine houses in the
city and walking its broad street today will summon a feeling of elegance in
this beautiful city.
